About Me

About Me

I am a qualified Counsellor and run my own private practice in Rhuddlan, North Wales. I have worked extensively with trauma, domestic abuse, sexual abuse, depression, anxiety and stress, PTSD and low self-confidence.

I combine both Solution Focused Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which are both well-established therapy techniques that share certain basic similarities. Broadly speaking, both forms of therapy focus on helping the client identify solutions while decreasing the emphasis on negative aspects of the client’s life. By combining aspects of both therapies, a powerful tool is created to help clients achieve their goals.

Solution Focused Therapy is a form of talk therapy, which emphasizes the importance of the present and the future rather than dwelling on the past, encouraging clients to focus on creating new life goals. I support my clients in these new goals, for example by offering practical guidance in developing more supportive social networks or relaxation techniques. Important life changes that can be achieved through effective Solution Focused Therapy include higher self-confidence and stronger relationships.

As Cognitive Behavioural Therapy directly facilitates changes in the negative thinking patterns that may lead to a pre-occupation with past problems, through effective application of both therapies, clients can learn to focus on the positive elements of their life while gaining the new confidence to achieve their life goals.

With the combination of CBT and Solution Focused Therapy, we can both discover how you are resilient and stronger than you think, as well as what patterns hold you back from having a good life. I also use elements of other types of therapy that blend mindfulness, and body awareness.

My qualifications include a Masters in Youth Justice, Probation and Applied Criminology; BA(Hons) in Criminology; BSc(Hons) Criminal Justice; Diploma in Probation Studies/Community Justice; and Level 4 Advanced Diploma in Counselling.

I undertake continued professional development on an ongoing basis, have regular external clinical supervision  and I am a non registrant member of the NPC (National Counselling Society) and Psychology Today.

"I came to Karen at my lowest point.  I tried two counsellors, but neither got back in contact with me.  Then I found Karen's profile and I was so relieved.  I couldn’t see a way out of my current situation and in all honesty, I didn’t have the energy to do so by myself. From the first session, it is evident that she truly cares, and applies the perfect balance between getting to the route of the problem, but also providing actionable tasks to work on in-between sessions. We looked at my goals for the future, and set homework for myself to improve my self care strategies.  I now understand why patterns were repeating in my life, I have come to terms with my past and most importantly have the tools to manage these feelings and situations much better in the future. I will always be grateful to Karen and would recommend her to anyone who is thinking about taking their first step.  She honestly goes out of her way to support you 100%"

"I dont think I would be where I am today without your support.  Counselling has helped me put things into perspective.  I was able to reduce my medication and start taking control of my life again with your support"

""Karen is a fantastic counsellor. I attended sessions to support me with my grieving process after losing a loved one to Covid. Karen listened, helped me to accept my loss and supported me massively through my grief. Additionally, her memory is exceptional and she always remembered everything I spoke about, even when I started to have fortnightly and then monthly sessions - this made my sessions even more personal and meaningful. She encouraged me to focus on myself before trying to help others (you can't pour from an empty cup) and supported me with other situations that occurred in my personal life. I looked forward to every session and I know that have greatly benefitted from her time, work and support. I would recommend her to anyone! Thank you for everything Karen x"

“I highly recommend Karen as a Counsellor.  I reached a point when I felt I couldn’t cope any more with what was going on in my life, and I needed help.  I felt comfortable talking to Karen and she made me feel at ease.  She listened and supported me and I never felt that I was  taking up too much of her time.  Karen taught me how to cope, and I am now in a much better place.

I can’t thank Karen enough for the help and support she gave me”.

"I came to Karen struggling to understand the impact the domestic abuse that had taken place a few years ago had had on me. I knew there were things bubbling below the surface that were weaving their way into how I formed relationships and the way I have behaved since then, but I didn’t know what they were or how to deal with them. The hours I’ve spent working with Karen have been the most valuable of my life. Not only did we form a trusting, patient relationship, but she helped me slowly understand what had happened to me. After three months of work I now feel equipped to do things differently. It’s been the most liberating and empowering experience and I’ve learnt things that will stay with me forever. Thank you Karen!"

"My experience with Karen was excellent – over just 6 sessions we got to the core of my issues and worked through them. I have always been an anxious person and as a consequence I didnt sleep properly and was a chronic worrier.  It was very easy to talk to Karen and she has helped me to understand the causes of my anxiety and build some good coping mechanisms to manage my worries and negative thinking.  I now sleep very well at night and I couldn’t recommend Karen more highly."
